Information on Data Protection of Burda Community Network GmbH - Data Protection Policy

Burda Community Network GmbH is a central marketing agency for the companies of Hubert Burda Media.

In the following, we would like to briefly illustrate the position of Burda Community Network GmbH on data protection, how we protect your data and what it entails for you when using our personalized services. Basically, our approach is that protection of your privacy is of paramount importance. Therefore, compliance with legal provisions relating to data protection is a matter of course for us.  In addition, it is important to us that you always know when we store which data and how we use it.
Personal data is any information about the personal and factual circumstances of a specific or identifiable individual.  This includes information and details such as your name, your address or other mailing address, the phone number. Your email address is likewise part of it where it contains any reference to your name such that you are identifiable.  Information by means of which your identity cannot be determined is not part of it. Such information includes for instance, only the body height, only the indication of gender or age or education or income.  In many cases, our interactive services provide the option of entering such data (without any reference to the name).  Information of a general nature, e.g. "15% of our Internet users are between 55 and 65 years of age" also are not personal data.
What about IP addresses etc.?
By accessing this website, possible identification data (IP address) and other details (date, time, page viewed) are saved on our server for data security purposes. Any analysis of the data, except for statistical purposes and then in anonymous or pseudonymous form (i.e. IP address truncated by several digits or encoded with a different sequence), is not performed.
On disclosing personal data to third parties
Burda Community Network GmbH uses your personal information only within the company and passes it on only to those companies that are involved in fulfilling the contracts concluded with you or otherwise involved in rendering services - this particularly pertains to companies whose advertising business we manage and other companies of Hubert Burda Media, in the event that your request cannot be processed by us directly. When and if we use external service providers (e.g. shipping companies), these service providers only receive the personal data from us which is necessary for rendering their respective service.

Otherwise, your personal information will only be disclosed to third parties when there is a legal basis to do so, when you have provided your express consent, or when we are obliged to surrender it, for instance due to a court or administrative order.
Collection and processing of user information in pseudonymous form
Burda Community Network GmbH collects demographic data (thus information on age, gender, residence, income, occupation, education, etc.) of users of various services and information about their Internet usage. The demographic data and information obtained on user behavior, however, is stored separately from the related personal information under a pseudonym.  A pseudonym is an identifier which takes the place of the name or other identifying characteristics and precludes identifying the respective individual and drawing conclusions about a particular individual.

Burda Community Network GmbH´s aim in collecting such information is twofold:  Firstly, we would like to be able to provide the users of our websites with customized online offers containing content and services that are of relevance and interest to them. In this manner, we have the opportunity of offering you more individual (but precisely not individualized) content in both editorial as well as promotional respect and thus also increase the personal value for you within our online services. Secondly, we would like to help our advertisers to reach the correct target group as precisely as possible and without much wastage. Burda Community Network GmbH, for example, publishes generalized user statistics (e.g. "70% use the online service XY"), in order to present and describe our services to potential partners, advertisers and other dialog partners or to be able to use them for other lawful purposes.

By means of the use of pseudonyms and anonymization of the information obtained, however, your privacy is protected at all times because the information does not allow for any conclusions about individuals. You are at all times entitled to request information about the data stored under your pseudonym.  You are additionally also always entitled to object to the creation of a user profile with effect for the future.
